Short story ideas: what to do next
Short stories usually cover one change in one character. Keep the idea small: one want, one obstacle, one moment where the character has to choose. If the idea needs a map and a family tree, it's probably a novel.
- Find the scene where it breaks. Where does the obstacle hit hardest? Start as close to that moment as you can.
- Make the stakes personal. "The city will fall" is abstract. "Her sister will never speak to her again" hurts.
- Choose the ending before you write. Do they get what they want, what they need, both or neither? That answer is your theme.
