Writer's Block: How to Get Unstuck
There isn't one kind of writer's block, so there isn't one cure. Find out which kind you have, then try the fix that matches it.
What kind of stuck are you?
Question 1 of 3
When you sit down to write, what happens?
Why writer's block happens
The phrase was popularised by the psychoanalyst Edmund Bergler in the 1940s, but writers had described the feeling long before. Modern research suggests it isn't one thing. Yale psychologists Jerome Singer and Michael Barrios, studying blocked professional writers in the early 2000s, found clusters of blocked writers who were mainly anxious, angry, apathetic or disappointed. That is why generic advice like "just write every day" helps some people and makes others feel worse.
Quick fixes that work for most blocks
- Shrink the task. Not "write chapter nine" but "write one line of dialogue for chapter nine".
- Change the medium. Write by hand, dictate into your phone, or write in a different room.
- Stop mid-sentence. Ernest Hemingway said he always stopped when he knew what happened next, so the next day's start was easy.
- Use a prompt as a warm-up. Ten minutes on a random writing prompt gets the machinery moving without risking your project.
- Talk it out. Explaining your plot problem to a friend (or a rubber duck) often solves it before they reply.
When it's more than a block
If you've been unable to write for months, and it comes with low mood, poor sleep or loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, it may be burnout or depression rather than a craft problem. Talking to a doctor or counsellor is a strong move, not a failure.
Questions writers ask
What is writer's block?
Writer's block is a period when a writer can't produce new work or make progress, despite wanting to. The term was popularised by the psychoanalyst Edmund Bergler in the 1940s. It is usually a symptom of something specific (fear, fatigue, a plot problem) rather than a lack of talent.
How do I get over writer's block fast?
Lower the bar: write badly on purpose for ten minutes, switch to a different scene, or answer a writing prompt unrelated to your project. If the block is a plot problem, go back to the last scene that worked and ask what the character wants now.
Is writer's block real?
The experience is real and common. Research by psychologists Jerome Singer and Michael Barrios at Yale in the early 2000s found blocked writers tended to fall into distinct patterns, from anxious to angry to apathetic, which suggests different causes need different fixes.
What does the "Unstick me" tool do with my text?
It sends the paragraph you paste to an AI model, which suggests five possible next beats based on details in your writing. It won't rewrite your text, and FictionForge doesn't store it.
Can writing prompts help with writer's block?
Yes, especially when the block is perfectionism or burnout. A low-stakes prompt gets you writing again without the pressure of your main project.
