Tips for mystery writers
- Play fair
- Show the reader every clue the detective sees. The Detection Club's oath (Christie, Sayers and others) made this a rule of the genre.
- Work backwards
- Decide what really happened first, then decide what the detective sees and in what order.
- Use red herrings with care
- Every false lead should have an innocent explanation that holds up on a second read.

Questions writers ask
How do you write a mystery story?
Start from the solution: who did it, how and why. Then plan the clues, the false leads and the moment the detective sees the truth. Draft in the order the reader will experience it.
What makes a good mystery idea?
One detail that doesn't fit: a stopped clock, the wrong shoes, a letter written before the death. That detail is your first clue and your hook.
What is a cozy mystery?
A gentler mystery, usually with an amateur sleuth, a small community and violence kept off the page. Agatha Christie's Miss Marple stories are the classic examples.
