What a mystery plot needs
- Play fair. Show the reader every clue the detective uses. The "fair play" rule goes back to the Golden Age writers of the Detection Club.
- Plant a red herring with a reason. Every false lead should come from someone hiding a different, smaller secret.
- Write the ending first. Decide the solution, then work backwards to place clues and misdirection.

Questions writers ask
How do you plot a mystery?
Start with the crime and the solution, list the clues that point to it, then decide how each clue is hidden or misread. Then add suspects, each with a motive and something to hide.
What is a closed-circle mystery?
A mystery with a fixed group of suspects cut off from the outside world, such as a snowbound house or a stranded train. Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None is the classic example.
How many suspects should a mystery have?
Short stories usually manage with three or four. Novels often have five to eight, each needing a believable motive.
